NIDA's National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
IQ Solutions has supported the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in promoting its annual health observance National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) since its inception in 2010. In 2016, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) joined NIDA as a federal partner. Now in its 8th year, NDAFW is on track to see more than 2,100 educational events and activities around the world planned by more than 500 individuals and organizations determined to help youth shatter the myths about substance misuse.
Unlike other health observances focused on substance misuse education, NDAFW seeks to provide the scientific facts about the consequences of substance misuse on the brain, body, and behavior, particularly among teens. NDAFW grew as an extension of NIDA’s popular Drugs and Alcohol Chat Day, where NIDA scientists answer students’ questions about substances in real time. NDAFW event planners include schools, school-based prevention and leadership programs, parent advocates, local government agencies, treatment programs, and so many more! Anyone can participate and plan an event or activity, big or small.
NDAFW occurs each year at the end of January. This year, it will be held from January 22 through January 28. You can see the range of educational events being held by going to the NDAFW Events Map. You can check for events being held in your state. Join them if you can! If your state is not represented, get on the phone with someone you know and ask them to hold an activity. Or even better, plan an event yourself! It’s easy to get involved, and you can find a list of event ideas on the NDAFW website.
At the very least, share NIDA’s new Drugs: Shatter the Myths video with at least one teen you know.
